How to Import Kenyan Coffee: A Buyer's Guide

6 min read

Kenya produces some of the world's most sought-after Arabica — bright, complex and full-bodied. If you're a roaster or importer looking to buy green coffee direct from the source, here's what you need to know to source it well.

Understand Kenyan coffee grades

Kenyan coffee is graded by screen (bean) size, not by cup quality alone — though larger grades often correlate with quality. Knowing the grades helps you order the right lot.

  • AA — the largest bean size (screen 17/18), the most prized and priced.
  • AB — a blend of A and B beans (screen 15/16); excellent value and very common in exports.
  • PB (Peaberry) — a single round bean; distinctive, concentrated flavour.
  • C, TT, T — smaller or lighter grades used for blends and value lots.

Certifications buyers ask for

Depending on your market, certifications open doors and command premiums. For the EU and specialty US buyers, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance are common; organic is available on request. Every shipment ships with a Certificate of Origin and phytosanitary certificate.

MOQ, packaging and lead times

Green coffee typically ships in 60kg jute bags (or GrainPro liners to protect freshness), with a minimum order of a 20ft container (~300 bags). By sea, expect roughly 3–5 weeks transit to Europe or the Gulf; longer to Asia and the Americas.

Pricing and Incoterms

Green coffee is priced against the market plus a differential for grade, quality and certification. Decide early whether you want FOB Mombasa (you arrange freight) or CIF/DDP (we deliver to your port or door) — controlling logistics through your supplier often simplifies the deal.

De-risk before you commit

Never buy a container of coffee you haven't evaluated. Request green samples for your own cupping, ask for cupping notes and traceability, and — ideally — visit the source or request a verified video report before contracting. This is exactly how serious buyers avoid costly surprises.
